Shrubs and trees may be transplanted during this dormant period. Deciduous trees and conifers may be pruned as needed. Very fragile shrubs, such as gardenia, may need protection if temperatures drop into the teens. Heavy mulching with leaves and pine straw will help protect young tender plants from frost damage.

Flowers:
Pansies and violas should be fed with liquid fertilizer and fungicide.Seeds of hardy annuals, such as sweetpeas, larkspur, and cornflowers may be sewn.

February in Atlanta can be very deceiving. One day it may feel like spring; the next day may bring an ice storm. Hard freezes can still be expected in February.

Shrubs and Trees:
Prune fruit trees and crepe myrtles. Feed your flowering trees with a 6-8-6 fertilizer. Dogwoods and evergreens can continue to be planted.

March 24th is the average date of the late frost. March, like February, may be either very cold or deceivingly warm. This is an excellent time to begin spading and working beds, remembering to work decayed organic matter into beds.

Prune damaged wood from shrubs and trees. The first trees to leaf out will be the weeping willow and the purple plum.

The days begin to get longer. April is one of Atlanta's most beautiful months.

Flowering shrubs and trees are pruned and fertilized after blooming. Most of your plants should be fed before hot summer weather begins.

Flowers:
Begin installing Spring/Summer annuals after the April 15th. Summer flowering buds such as gladioli and tuberoses may be planted. The seeds of most annuals may be sown in well-worked beds after April 15th. Weed beds frequently.

May is very pleasant in Atlanta, get out and do some gardening.

May is the month for transplanting the small wild azaleas. After Azalea and Camellia finish blooming they should be pruned and fertilized. They will also benefit from an application of liquid "MirAcid" by "Miracle Grow". Feed roses for a second blooming.

Flowers:
Zinnias, marigolds, celesia, etc. may still be planted. Pinch back petunias, chrysanthemums, and allysum. Pick pansy blooms to ensure future blooms.

This is a good time to perform Spring/Summer Cleanups and apply the recommended mulch. June is the beginning of the dry season (June-September) in Atlanta. A lack of rains requires mulching and watering. Mulching heavily will save money and time spent watering. New plantings should be watered deeply at least twice per week and monitored closely.

This is Atlanta's hottest and driest month. Keep up with mulch around all plants to preserve moisture. Continue watering, make sure to soak deeply rather than spray lightly.

Lawns:
Raise the blade on your lawn mower. In hot, dry weather mowing closely will damage your lawn. Bermuda lawns will be thriving in the hot weather, Fescue will need watering.

Shrubs and Trees:
Prune old blossoms on crepe myrtle's to prolong blooming season.

Flowers:
Early July is the last chance to plant fast blooming annuals. Water annuals and perennials heavily and add extra mulch.

However, reseeding is useless if you do not take the time to water the new seed to help it become established. Apply fertilize to help yard recover from summer months.

Shrubs and Trees:
Now is the perfect time to plant any container grown shrubs. Water deeply and mulch heavily.

Flowers:
Annual flowers are beginning to look rough. Next month they will be removed and replaced with Fall/Winter color beds.

October is a very colorful autumn month in Atlanta. A perfect time to gather leaves for composting. Don't bag those leaves, compost them naturally in an out of the way location to be used later in the garden, the worms love old rotten leaves.

Lawns:
Aeration and Overseeding can continue until the end of October. Apply fertilize to help yard recover from summer months.

Shrubs and Trees:
Continue to install any container plants you may want to set out in the landscape. This is also a good time for pruning and shaping of ornamental shrubs. Prune hydrangea for the next year so that it will produce lots of flowers.

Flowers:
Pansies and violas may be planted now for winter color display. Cut back gladioli. Summer tubers and bulbs such as caladiums and cannas must be dug, dried, and stored. This is also a good time to plant your perennials.

November is the optimum time for planting ballad and burlapped shrubs and trees. (fruits, deciduous, and evergreen). You may also continue to prune and shape throughout the month.

Flowers:
Cut chrysanthemums back to ground level, as soon as blooming is finished. Plant spring bulbs, putting bone meal in holes, but not in contact with bulbs.
